Confessions: “I refuse to be scared”
I was born to Egyptian immigrants that escaped their mother country to find a better life. My father was a self-made Marxist when that kind of thing was Illegal in Egypt and his outlook on the world was inherited. I began making my own way at 17 when I walked to Canada on a diet exclusively composed of couscous. From that moment I put on the backpack and have rarely taken if off. Crisscrossing the country in other peoples cars, skateboarding along highway 80 and hoping the occasional freight train became my way of life. Sometimes we experience too many things in too short of a period of time to fully remember them, with me this is very much the case. Over the years the scenery changed and the struggles have increased but the story has remained the same: hitch-hiking the Himalayas, living in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, bicycling thousands of miles in Central America and Mexico, and developing my craft as an artisan. I am a free man because I am a person of will. Willpower is an attribute of both the sane and the insane, but few sane people understand its true friendship. For me there is no end to the road and the destination will always change, but I am never alone because community is anywhere a smile or a dirty joke can take you. I keep going because for me there is no other way to live. I refuse to be scared because fear is the enemy of wisdom. I live Illegal because fear and complacency are the tools of legality (law). I am pride and disgrace, because in the moment they are the same. I am a patriot and expat because borders are an invention I choose not to recognize. I am me because I accept contradiction and live by rules that cannot be defined. Finally, I will sleep with as many teachers as I can because they are so fucking sexy.
